Why won't my new Dell computer accept my hp printer?

Hello,

(ANS) YES!! both of the previous answers could be correct. If your new DELL system comes with windows vista as opposed to windows XP, then it could well turn out to be a printer driver (also known as a device driver) problem.

No.1 Windows Vista is still relatively new (the new kid on the block) even 12months on from its launch here in the UK. i.e. retail launch that is.

This tends to mean that device driver software is now either out of date so wont work with vista (i.e. its the old xp version) or isn't vista compatible. Or HP haven't re-written or written new drivers for this printer.

*Many software %26amp; hardware companies are still playing catch up in terms of making drivers specifically for Vista.

No.2 You should check that Windows XP or Vista is seeing or detecting your HP printer correctly via PnP. You can check this in windows, control panel%26gt;system%26gt;see device manager, your printer should show up the the PnP tree of items connected to your computer. If the HP printer has a yellow question mark (or is it an exclamation mark?) next to it, then the printer hasn't installed correctly.

No.2 Check with HP that you have the latest drivers for your printers make %26amp; model and check if these are Vista compatible. You may well find that newer or more recent drivers for vista are now available and will work, you should be able to download these for free from HP if they are.

Have you installed the drivers before you plugged in the printer?

You will need either the driver disc or download the appropriate drivers for your operating system and printer model from HP.com.
If it's new and has vista, you might want to make sure the printer is compatible.
