I have a MacBook Pro and an HP Vivera printer, and I don't have to use software. HP printers work extremely well with Mac computers. Once you have the printer hooked up all you have to do is press the print button and voila!! You'll be printing in no time! Good luck!Mac compatable with hp printer?
The software to hook you printer up to your new MAC computer is on the same CD as your Windows drivers. You just have to select MAC OS drivers on the screen instead of Windows based drivers. Here's a link forthe MAC drivers, if you lost the CD.

it should work through usb fine, unless its a really old printer but i dont know, my macbook worked straight away with a hp deskjet 5650, didnt need any extra software or anything, and it works with the same usb cable.
