I don't think your new cartridge is 100% OK, it might be damaged with the surface. I had the same problem with HP Deskjet. I was tired of changing cartridges finally I decided to change the printer.
My guess would be that it's just a bad cartridge.
on some printers you have a button to give you a choice for black print /colour print %26amp; default both colours
