Why won't the usb cord recognize my hp printer?

i purchased an hp 5360 printer and the usb cord when attached does not recognize my printer on the computer. I have a 4 year old dell xpWhy won't the usb cord recognize my hp printer?
I had something similar happen to me when new Dell Notebook PCs and a HP Laserjet and I was surprised that Dell Technical Support couldn't help or explain why?

In the end BELKIN Technical Support bec I was using a Belkin cable explained all the nitty gritty of opening your Control Panel and then going to Hardware Devices to insure the Computer was recognizing the particular USB port to support a printer and properly installed etc.

Hope the Above Info Helps! Why won't the usb cord recognize my hp printer?
Because they've never been introduced?

Cords don't recognise. They plug in.

The COMPUTER is what needs to recognise the printer. If it is not detecting the new hardware, you will have to manually ';install'; it. This will require the driver disk that came with the printer.

Dude...it's a Dell, that means a piece of crap, but XP is still XP... from the desktop, press the %26lt;F1%26gt; key to pull-up the Help window. Assuming that the USB port you are using is connected, the printer is plugged into a power outlet, the USB cord is plugged into the printer and computer, and the printer is turned on...the step by step instructions provided will allow you to install the drivers and then the printer.

Good Luck!
You should install the driver before connecting it to the computer

If that doesn't work, try a different usb port. One of yours may not work. Make sure that it is plugged in and turned on, but make sure to install the driver first.
May also have an issue with the device is USB 2.0 and your old computer only supports USB 1.x
is it windows xp compatible or vista
If you go to hp's website and search the model number, they'll have a free driver for your operating system.
